Student Reflection

After working on this project the past few weeks, my views on World War ll have changed. Originally, I felt distant from the war since it was something I learned in history class or a collection of stories my great-grandpa used to tell me for hours upon end. This project allowed me to put myself into the war and to learn the depth of the sacrifices made during this time by not only the service men made but all America. My "Silent Hero" was John Kalie. It is mind-boggling to think he was just a few years older than me when his plane was shot down and he was killed. Even though he died over 70 years before I was born, I hope my research will allow him, his fellow veterans, and their sacrifice be remembered. John Kalie and many others remained devoted to their country and paid the ultimate sacrifice for Americas freedom during this war and I will always be thankful for him.

Letter to Soldier

Dear John Kalie,

It breaks my heart that your life ended when it was just beginning. Honor was a characteristic you never lacked and you demonstrated it as you and your crew flew over the Mediterranean Sea when the German bullets struck. You could have jumped into the sea but you didn't. You held your responsibility to your crew and plane as pilot. What was that like? The fear of death resides so strongly in everyone and you looked death in the face so valiantly.

You held such a great amount of bravery and strength at just twenty-three. When I look upon my life I wonder if I could do the same. The plane you flew became engulfed in flames, but you continued to fly it and lead your crew. What an honorable way to die. I am sure that your parents and siblings were devastated with your death. I have no doubt that they respected you all the more. Your youngest brother wasn't even ten. Would you change your story to be with them?

I know you aren't alive to tell your tale and even though I feel I know you I am missing your side of the story. I selfishly wish I had this missing piece because I would find the answer to so many of my questions. But for now, thank you for the honor of finding and telling your story.

Thank you for your sacrifice to our nation. May you forever rest in peace.
