State Homefront

Pennsylvania in World War II

Pennsylvania made many contributions and sacrifices for the war effort. Pennsylvania was a leading producer of coal and steel during World War ll. Factories in the state began producing War time products and citizens collected scraps of metal and rubber for the war effort. Pennsylvania's citizens made many sacrifices and faced many challenges during this time. Food shortages and the lack of luxury products became a commonality for all PA citizens. Victory Gardens became popular as a way to coop with the shortages and people learned to live without luxury goods.

Pennsylvania made more direct connections to the war through the military as well as on the home front. There are many military installations in Pennsylvania: Carlisle Barracks, Fort Indiantown Gap, Harrisburg Military Post, Letterkenny Army Depot, the New Cumberland Army Depot. Pennsylvania provided vital materials for the war as well as essential military aid.
